Struggling With Acid Reflux? Ask Yourself THIS Simple Question

Struggling With Acid Reflux? Ask Yourself THIS Simple Question

[Video transcript] Hey, it's Dr. Dan, and I'm here to talk about the one crucial question most people don't ask when they're experiencing stomach issues: "What did I eat?"

Instead of heading straight for the antacids like Prilosec or Tums, it's time to rewind and consider your recent meals. This simple question can be a game-changer for understanding your symptoms.

The Subtle Sign of Stomach Trouble

There's a very subtle way your body might be telling you something is off with your stomach: clearing your throat an hour or so after you eat. If you find yourself doing this, it's a strong indicator that you need to go back and think about what you just consumed.

You might have just had a large meal, or perhaps something that's a common trigger for many people. These include:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Tomatoes
  • Mints
  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco (if you're a smoker)

All of these can contribute to reflux symptoms.

Silent Reflux vs. Typical Acid Reflux (GERD)

We often associate heartburn with obvious pain – that burning sensation that can sometimes be so severe it mimics a heart attack, sending people to the emergency room.

However, sometimes reflux is very silent. You might not feel overt pain, but that little throat-clearing habit is your body's way of signaling something. When that happens, mentally rewind and ask, "What did I eat?" This simple exercise can potentially save you numerous doctor visits.

The Power of a Diet Diary

In my clinic, a common and incredibly effective tool we use is a diet diary. It's straightforward: you track your food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and then you note any symptoms you experienced.

  • Did the food send you running to the bathroom?
  • Did your energy levels plummet? (e.g., from a "10" one day to a "3" the next)

By sifting through this information, we can often find clear patterns. For example, you might discover that every time you ate wheat, you had to clear your throat, or every time you consumed dairy, you experienced a sudden trip to the bathroom.

These patterns happen all the time, and a diet diary is a remarkably easy and inexpensive way to source the cause of your reflux. Whether the issue is in your esophagus (the tube going down your throat), your stomach, or further down, it's all considered reflux, and knowing what you ate is key to understanding it.
