Do naturopathic doctors take insurance?

No. Naturopathic doctors in Arizona do not take medical insurance, or rather insurance carriers do not take them. All care is paid for directly and out of pocket by the patient. 

One benefit of this cash pay model is that there is motivation from both doctor and patient to work more efficiently and effectively toward better health outcomes. However, this is not what most health care consumers have come to expect from doctors offices. 

This also means that while NDs in Arizona can order blood lab tests and prescribe most medications, these are not always covered by insurance, and might be more expensive than the same orders and prescriptions from MDs who are covered. 

Do naturopathic doctors take Medicare?

No. Because naturopathic doctors are not federally recognized the way MDs or DOs are -- licensure still varies by state or jurisdiction -- their services are not covered by Medicare.  In Arizona, naturopathic medical care is paid for directly and out of pocket by the patient.

Superbills are written summaries of the care they receives during their visit that are annotated with appropriate visit codes (such as CPT) and diagnosis codes (such as ICD-10). Reimbursement varies by insurance plan.
