## What are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids (typically 2-50 amino acids) that act as signaling molecules in your body. They serve as the building blocks of proteins and play critical roles in many biological processes including hormone regulation, tissue repair, immune function, and metabolism.

As we age, our natural peptide production declines, which can lead to:

- Decreased energy and vitality
- Slower metabolism and weight gain
- Reduced muscle mass and strength
- Hormone imbalances
- Slower healing and recovery
- Compromised immune function

## How do Peptides Work?

Unlike synthetic medications that may disrupt your body's natural processes, peptides work by supplementing your body's own signaling molecules. They bind to specific receptors on cell surfaces to trigger certain biological responses such as:

- Hormone Release: Peptides such as CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin can stimulate your pituitary gland to naturally produce more growth hormone
- Tissue Repair: BPC-157 and TB-500 have been studied to accelerate healing by promoting blood vessel growth and cellular regeneration
- Metabolic Regulation: [GLP-1 peptide medicines](/glp1-peptide-weight-loss) (Semaglutide, Tirzepatide) help regulate appetite, blood sugar and fat metabolism
- Immune Enhancement: Thymosin Alpha-1 shows promise for strengthening immune system function and T-cell development
- Inflammation Control: KPV peptide has been shown to reduce inflammatory pathways without suppressing immune responses

This targeted approach shows promise for more precise, effective treatment that may work in harmony with your existing biological systems, promoting natural healing and optimization from within.

But first, let's honest about peptides...

Peptides are very trendy online and in social media right now. Don't be fooled! Peptides fall between the cracks of being medications or supplements. There are serious medications that are peptides like semaglutide and light supplements like collagen powders that are all called peptides. That's a very wide range! The vast majority of peptides are not FDA approved . Because research data is freely available and because they can be cheaply manufactured, and because peptides are one of the biggest, and fastest-growing Gold Rushes in healthcare -- expected to be a $160 billion market by 2030 -- they are mostly sold to the public like supplements -- relatively harmless -- they are not. Buyer beware ! Safety is paramount. Peptides are more like medications -- and you should think about them that way. Most peptides being researched are powerful and designed to elicit specific reactions in the body. More often, they are researched -- and still being researched -- for certain types of bodies (usually animals ) -- with certain constitutions -- with certain conditions -- under certain circumstances. This may not be you. Peptides should be managed by a medical professional who is trained in their use -- and when not to use them. There is currently more anecdotal advice than medical advice out there. Few medical practitioners are aware of peptides or trained in their effective, therapeutic use. There is a lot of "n=1" experimentation, "bro science" and experience sharing. There is a lot of confirmation bias and misinformation. Message board posters or AI can parrot research and common search info -- but they are not doctors or clinicians . That's a big gray area. We know enough to be dangerous. People really need to know what they're doing. Most don't. Proceed with caution.

## Frequently Asked Questions about Peptides

### What are peptides and how do they work?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids (typically 2-50 amino acids) that serve as signaling molecules in the body. They work by binding to specific receptors on cell surfaces to trigger biological responses like hormone release, tissue repair, fat metabolism, or immune function. Unlike synthetic medications that may disrupt natural processes, peptides supplement your body's own signaling systems to help promote natural healing and optimization from within.

### Are peptides safe and FDA-approved?

Some peptides like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are FDA-approved and have been safely used for specific conditions like type 2 diabetes and obesity. The vast majority of peptides advertised out there are not FDA-approved. Some are available by doctor prescription from FDA-approved compounding pharmacies under certain circumstances and should only be used under qualified medical supervision. While some peptides have been shown to be generally well-tolerated in specific circumstances, side effects vary. Most peptides require more human research.

### How long does it take to see results from peptide therapy?

Results vary by peptide type and individual factors. For FDA-approved weight loss peptides (GLP-1 agonists), patients typically notice appetite reduction within 1-2 weeks with progressive weight loss over 3-6 months. Healing peptides like BPC-157, which are available orally as a supplement, may show some tissue repair benefits within 2-6 weeks depending on the condition.

### Is peptide therapy legal in Arizona?

Yes. Licensed naturopathic physicians in Arizona can legally prescribe peptides through FDA-registered compounding pharmacies when clinically appropriate. Arizona is one of the states with the broadest naturopathic prescribing authority in the country, which means Dr. Wool can legally prescribe, supervise and manage peptide therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

### How much does peptide therapy cost in Scottsdale?

Cost varies depending on the peptide, dosing protocol, and duration of treatment. FDA-approved medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are often partially covered by insurance for qualifying diagnoses. Compounded peptides are typically cash-pay and range from $100–$400/month depending on the protocol. Dr. Wool's offers a a free 15 minute Discovery Call to discuss how peptides could be integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan.

### What is the difference between peptide therapy from a naturopathic doctor versus a med spa?

Naturopathic physicians like Dr. Wool conduct comprehensive lab testing, full medical history review, and build peptide therapy into a root-cause treatment plan — not as a standalone service. Med spas often prescribe peptides with minimal workup, primarily for aesthetics or weight loss. The difference is context: a naturopath uses peptides as one tool within a personalized, medically supervised wellness strategy.

### Can peptides help with gut health and digestive conditions?

Yes - this is one of Dr. Wool's areas of clinical focus. Peptides like [BPC-157](/blog/bpc157) have been studied for their ability to promote gut lining repair, reduce intestinal inflammation, and support healing in conditions like [leaky gut](/leaky-gut) , [IBS](/ibs-treatment) , [Crohn's disease](/crohns-disease-treatment) and [ulcerative colitis](/ulcerative-colitis-treatment) . [KPV](/blog/kpv) is another peptide showing promise for calming gut inflammation via the NF-κB pathway. These are evaluated on a case-by-case basis alongside comprehensive GI testing.

### Do I need to come into the office for peptide therapy, or is telehealth available?

Dr. Wool sees patients both in-person at his Scottsdale office (20801 N. Scottsdale Rd.) and via telehealth throughout Arizona. The patient must establish first in person. Follow-ups can often be conducted remotely. Lab work can be ordered to a location convenient to you.
