## Did you know...?

Did you know that Americans have purchased more than 267 million life insurance policies? And how much is in retirement accounts? We'll get to that answer in a minute! It's Dr. Dan, here with another "lunch and learn" video. Today, we're talking about the one and only retirement plan. Am I a financial planner? No. Am I a life insurance salesman? Also no.

But what's the answer to that question about retirement accounts? $35 trillion. Yes, trillion dollars goes into retirement accounts every year. My question is: how much actually comes out? Because there is only one retirement plan. Do you want to know what it is? It is being healthy. You truly can't take it with you.

## A Hard Lesson Learned: My Father's Story

Here's a quick story that drives this point home. My father was an incredibly successful guy. He died at the age of 69 from non-small cell lung cancer. He grew up poor and lived the American dream, becoming the group president of a Fortune 500 company. Over the years, he built a very successful business and in fact, an entire industry. If you've ever had a home warranty on your house, my dad was one of the guys responsible.

My dad retired, and less than a year later, he was diagnosed with cancer out of the blue. He didn't get to enjoy his retirement. He earned enough but he never got to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

## The Reality of Ignoring Your Health

Now, I'm a doctor, and I help people like yourself. The one thing I see consistently is people coming to me when they already have a condition. And it's not just gut health and hormones; there's instability going on. I see people in their fifties and sixties who can barely get around. I see people who are caregivers for their husbands or wives, and they're 62, 65, 70, sometimes younger.

These are the times that everybody says you should retire. You're going to retire at 65. Hey, at 59 and a half, you can take that distribution from your IRA or your 401k. But if you're not there to get it, what's the point? If you are not in the shape of health to enjoy it, what's the point? You need to be healthy.

## Stop Procrastinating on Your Well-being

Your health is the one and only retirement plan that you can truly rely on. So, if you're having symptoms, you need to get those checked out, and you need to get to the underlying cause of those symptoms. You can go through 20, 30 years of band-aids, and then suddenly you have something else that is more debilitating, or even near-fatal.

I don't want that for people. I want you to be healthy. I want you to enjoy your retirement. Yes, there's a whole "live for today" ethos. Absolutely, enjoy every moment. Enjoy your children, enjoy your grandchildren, and enjoy your life and have fun. Absolutely. But if you're saving for retirement and you're thinking those golden years are still a ways off, and you're going to earn more and get that extra on top of Social Security so you can walk along the Great Wall of China or ride your motorcycle across Europe... well, if you can't walk, if you can't move, if your joints hurt too much, if your stomach is aching too badly, if you can't even leave the country (talking non-COVID here), even if you can't even leave the house to get to an airplane, how about that? You're not going anywhere.

Start now. I implore you. Start now. What always happens is people wait until the last minute. I am the greatest procrastinator there ever was, but man, if something's off with my health, I'm with one of our docs immediately. Don't procrastinate when it comes to your health because your health is the one and only thing you have to retire on. Again, you can't take it with you.
