## Understanding and Managing IBD Flares

[video transcript] Today, we're talking about the common theme of IBD flares. Now, IBD is Inflammatory Bowel Disease. These are conditions like ulcerative colitis, Crohn's, microscopic colitis, diverticulitis. They're situations where the body attacks itself and the guts, and they're incredibly inflammatory, incredibly painful, and they last weeks and months.
When somebody is triggering that and getting into a flare, and most people will have these flares repeatedly throughout their lifetime, our goal in naturopathy is to one, look at the big picture, see what would be kind of causative to that jump in, and really try to, um, jump in when the flare starts, to minimize the intensity and duration of it, and then to prolong remission over a long period of time. How can we keep somebody instead of having these every three months, having them say every 30 years or even longer? So we're always looking at what's a permanent resolution for this condition.

## IBD and the Major Stressor Connection

The main thing to go back to the top of that is what do we do when it happens? Now these flares tend to track a major stressor. This might be like a divorce, the death of a loved one. Something where there's a massive stressor, a surprise almost, and then this kind of smoldering thing happens under the surface, and then all of a sudden gets bigger and bigger and bigger and up goes the flames. And now we're in this prolonged situation that also tends to track that stressor. In the case of the examples I mentioned, those things can last weeks and months, and so does the inflammatory bowel disease condition. The flare tends to last about that same amount of time.

So, what we want to do is, one, jump on it right when it happens, and then we want to help people maintain while they're on it. Usually looking at diet and lifestyle interventions in addition to natural supplements, medications, things that help to quash the flare and get the symptoms under control. And then we want to prolong that remission, but that common cause is a major stressor that is going to be prolonged, because that window is where we want to jump in and jump right on it.
