## Did you know...?

[video transcript] Did you know that at one point, nine Viagra prescriptions were filled every second around the world? While some might jokingly consider it a performance-enhancing drug for an "Olympic sport" like sex, it's crucial to understand that erectile dysfunction (ED) is far more significant than just a recreational aid.

Hey, it's Dr. Dan, here with another Lunch and Learn video, and today we're diving deep into ED. This isn't just about a "Friday night party drug"; it's a vital "canary in a coal mine" signaling major underlying health conditions that everyone in the bedroom needs to be aware of.

## Understanding the Roots of Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

You might be surprised to learn that while we've heard about "psychogenic" ED joked about in sitcoms, a whopping 80% of erectile dysfunction cases stem from other reasons. A small portion is due to damaged nerves, but the majority is vascular.

What does "vascular" mean? It means blood flow. Specifically, the vessels in that area are either too contracted or too clogged to allow proper blood circulation. When you consider how minuscule those vessels are, this becomes a major problem.

## ED is a Warning Sign

The presence of ED often indicates bigger issues further upstream in the larger vessels. Deposits that affect the small vessels in the penis are often a sign of issues in larger vessels elsewhere in the body. This is a crucial warning sign that needs to be checked out.

Nobody wants to face a heart attack, coronary heart disease, or diabetes, but these are all serious conditions that can directly affect a man's erection.

## Beyond ED: Taking Control of Your Health

The solution isn't necessarily just popping a Viagra or Cialis. True control lies in taking charge of your overall health. This means focusing on:

- Diet: What you eat profoundly impacts your vascular health.
- Exercise: Regular physical activity improves blood flow throughout your body.
- Lifestyle: Making healthy choices consistently.
- Self-care: The fundamental practices we often discuss in these videos.

Start with these foundational changes and build from there.

## Tips for ED Symptom Management

While lifestyle changes are paramount, there are ways to help manage symptoms. We know Viagra and Cialis best as pills, but did you know there's a more effective delivery method? It's called a troche.

Troches are dissolvable lozenges placed underneath the tongue. If you get them from a compounding pharmacy, often at a similar price, they can be customized to include ingredients that improve things like dopamine and nitric oxide. This method helps the medication get into your system faster because it bypasses the digestive system. So, if you're looking for a quicker effect, a troche might be a good way to go, but it needs to prescribed by a doctor in the know.
