## Did you know...?

[video transcript] Did you know that the longest burp, according to Guinness World Records, is a minute and 13 seconds, and that the loudest burp is 112 decibels? That's the same as standing next to a jackhammer or right next to a symphony orchestra. I'm not sure that's the kind of symphony I want to listen to!

## When to Get Concerned About Burping

It's Dr. Dan Wool, and yeah, burping, belching, eructation, as we call it in the medical field. What is this, and is it something serious, or is it just kind of a mild thing? Well, we want it to be mild. It's meant to happen once in a while. Now, if you're burping all the time, this could be indicative of some sort of downstream problem, and we want to avoid that.

## Back to Basics: Eating Habits and Digestion

So what do we do? We go back to basics.

If you're eating too fast or eating too much, these are really easy ways to have excessive belching. And then, are you really digesting all that food lower down in the small intestine?

Let's get into that. Are you predigesting the food in your mouth? If you have all these chunks that aren't getting digested by the time they get to your stomach or by the time they get to your small intestine, it's going to start causing lots of gas.

The other thing is just physical: if you're wolfing down your food, you're also wolfing down a lot of air, and the easiest way for the body to get rid of that is to belch. So, those are a couple of basic things that you can do to see if that burping will go away.

And then finally, one thing you should do is look into getting a digestive enzyme. These mimic the acids and enzymes in our stomach that help us break down food, giving the stomach a little bit of extra help and enabling that food to pass into the small intestine and the colon.
